It is inevitable that here in Guam you will have just as many good hikes as you do bad ones. Well our hike with the church youth and a few adults turned into a little bit of both and then a lot of ugly!
We started off our day meeting everyone to got the the start of the trail at about 8:15 in the morning on a Saturday morning. (This was last Saturday the 7th.) We piled into a few cars and the 3 Jeeps that were going to go into the trail and rode to the start of the hiking trail. We split into groups of hikers and riders but since there was hardly any riders (and I was interested to see what it would be like to ride a jeep into the trail) I hopped into a Jeep and rode with them. We had a few hiccups on our way in but overall we made it through the first 1/2 mile easily until we stumbled upon this:
After our break we had just about a mile left until we got to the over look where we could see our final destination: Sigua Falls.

Well I shouldn't say stumbled because this group of people are the hikers that we split up from in the first place. They had reached a muddy section of the hike and one of the hikers thought that the area she was walking through was safe. It was not safe and she ended up getting stuck up to her waist in mud that would suck her further into the ground the more she moved to try and get out. We ended up having to bring one of the Jeeps around and have one guy dig her out leg by leg and the drag her to safe grounds. It was entertaining to watch but scary for her because she literally could not help herself.
After that mishap I decided that I would rather hike the rest of the way in with the group. So the jeeps found their way on another path and the rest of the group continued walking. We got to a look out point where an old WWII tank had been abandoned and we took a break for a bit.
After our break we had just about a mile left until we got to the over look where we could see our final destination: Sigua Falls.
You can just make out the little pool in the upper portion of the falls and the water fall line where it falls into the lower pool. We hiked down to the lower pool. That was quite an adventure because we were literally going down a mountain and we had to have ropes to hold on to so that we didn't just roll all the way down!
There was a well worn path with craters in the dirt from all the people that had gone down to the falls. About halfway down everyone started to realize that we would have to climb back up it too!
But it was totally worth the hike in and down the mountain to get to this waterfall. We actually got to jump off the ledge of the waterfall into the pool below!
Matthew jumped about 4 times and I jumped once. I liked to just sit up on the ledge and listen to the falls. It was very peaceful.
Then it started to rain! And this is where we get to the bad part of the hike. The whole time that we were climbing back up the mountain it was pouring rain. And I mean pouring to the point where all you could do was focus on what was in front of you so that you didn't plummet to your death! Thankfully no one did and the worst that happened while going back up the mountain was that someone got a really bad cramp in her leg. Everyone made it back up in one piece and what do you know... it stopped raining when everyone was out!
Now it was time to start the hike back out of the trail. Mind you that is about 3.5 miles in the mud that just got a lot worst with the recent downpour. And this is where the hike turned into the ugly! Everyone was exhausted and wanted to ride in the jeeps but there wasn't enough room for everyone in the Jeeps. Some people had to suck it up and hike back out. I ended up with about 5 teens that I was walking out with. Matthew was with us at the beginning but then he wanted to stay behind and watch the Jeeps try and get over their first big hill after the rain.
To make a long story short. It is about 12:30 when started the hike back and we got lost once and stuck a bunch of times and didn't make it out until 3:20. It would rain constantly the entire time we were hiking. Not a downpour like before but a steady rain the whole time. It was pretty miserable. We were the first group of hikers out though and the next group didn't show up until about an hour later when we found out that the Jeeps had gotten stuck at that first hill and most of the riders had decided to trek on foot.
Matthew didn't end up coming out until about 5:15pm and he told us that the Jeeps were all stuck at the beginning of the overlook to the falls. We were able to get a ride back to our car and found out at church the next day that the jeeps hadn't gotten out until 4:30am the next morning!
It was a crazy time but we definitely will remember it for the story we have to tell!
