Old Wive's Beach

Sunday morning before the tide receded too much Matthew and I went out to Old Wive's Beach here on base to go snorkeling.  So now I have a few more snorkeling pictures to share with you guys.

I seem to remember back in middle school talking about plate tectonics and how the movement of the plates below the Earth's surface create cracks in the ocean floor.  Well the Pacific Ocean is one place where this happens and it creates a lot of the earthquakes and volcanic activity that happens out here.  At Old Wives beach there are many different cracks in the ocean floor that go down so deep that you can't see the bottom.  The cracks look like what you would see if you took an areal shot of some rivers leading to bigger bodies of water in the states.  It is just amazing to see the ocean floor go from 5 feet deep to dropping over 20 feet or more!  Here is a picture of one of the cracks we came across.  Notice you can't see the bottom in the darkest area of the picture.

These star fish are pretty cool.  They are really flexible and can move with the rock to settle on the ocean floor but they can also become so stiff (like if you try to pick it up) that one of the legs would break off before bending to another's will.  Matthew picked one out of the water once and it was stiff as a rock!

These next few pictures are of a feeding frenzy that we came across.  There were probably 50 or more fish swarming around this one area trying to get to what ever that food source was.

This clam was about 15ft deep on the ocean floor and Matthew dove down to get this beautiful shot!  That is what the clam looked like before it closed its shell.

Here are a couple funny pictures of Matthew and I in our goggles and snorkels.

This weird stuff was just sticking out of the ground but it was a pretty blue color so we took a picture of it!

This was probably the biggest fish that we saw out at Old Wives Beach.  He looked pretty mean but he didn't swim away from us.  He was staying in one area, probably because he had a meal prospect there.

And that is the last of those pictures.  Hope you enjoyed them because Matthew and I really enjoy going snorkeling and seeing new and exciting creatures of the ocean every time we go.

Thanks for reading!

April Update

I thought that since I had not given an update in a while that is was about time I did.  So I am going to tell you what has been going on this past month. Matthew First  (because his is shorter than mine): Matthew had his certification test this past month as well as his E4 qualification exam.  He took the E4 exam before he had certification tests.  The E4 exam has a lot to do with why he was assigned to unaccompanied travel to Guam.  He was supposed to be ranked up to an E4 before he could be sent overseas as a accompanied traveler.  (If that doesn't make sense to you...join the club)  But, luckily  Matthew feels like he did well on the exam so hopefully he will be ranked up to an E4 and there won't be any controversy over me joining him in Guam.  Then there's the certification tests; these are the tests that he takes at the school for learning how to be a Naval K9 handler.  Matthew feels that he did really well on these tests ...

Australian Vacation

Hello all!   I know that it has been quite a long time since I last posted a blog but I decided it was time for another post.  Having a little one crawling all over the place really takes up my time now-a-days.  Infact, the only reason I am able to write this now is because she is napping.  Maybe I will be able to get this done in the time it takes for one nap...we shall see.  So here it goes. This past week the Ohrvalls' took a much needed vacation to Cairns, Australia.  Matthew and I had such a blast taking Isabella on her first family vacation but it was difficult to transition our old vacationing without kids mindset and bring it to a vacationing with a baby mindset.  It is quite different going on vacation with an 8 month old than it is with just two adults.  Needless to say, we spent a lot more time in the hotel room during nap time and at parks for playtime.  But we were still able to do a lot of really fun stuff as a family that we ...

Your Due Date Is...

On today's blog I wanted to share with you all the ups and downs of determining out due date.  For those of you that don't know doctors use the first day of your last period to determine your due date early on.  When we found out that I was pregnant that date was estimated at August 27 2014.  For those of you that know me and know that that date is my birthday, I was pretty excited.  I thought it was pretty cool that our baby's due date was on my birthday. The next time that we came around to getting a chance to estimating the due date was at our 12 week ultrasound.  Now it is kind of hard to determine exactly when you are twelve weeks along if you don't know the exact date of conception.  So we estimated based on the doctor's method of using the first day of my last period and went to have the ultrasound around that mark.  According to that ultrasound, the 'dating ultrasound' I was further along that we originally thought.  However, baby girl d...
